Let us teach you how to set up an artwork.

1. Check the space where you can set up an artwork

  1. Double check the terms and conditions for your accommodation. In a lot of cases, people set up their artwork on a wall but if the place you live is customizable, you can make a hole in wherever you would like. In the other hand, If it is a rented place be careful with not make any damage in the room to avoid pay for some extra costs for you to fix it. So when you make a hole, choose a pin that opens only a small hole about the size of a thumbtack. If there are conspicuous holes such as nails or screws, unfortunately there are many cases where the resident is responsible for the cost. *we will recommend that you check the contract for details before customize your accommodation

  1. Do a little research for wall construction Gypsum board is often used for so many walls, but the thickness of gypsum board is about 1 to 2 cm, so for a heavy works (weight 5 kg or more/ canvas size 30 or more), It may not be able to withstand the weight with using a pin to set up an artwork. The gypsum board is supported by several pillars, and it is relatively stable if you stick a pin in the place where the board supports it.

Also, if the wall is concrete, you won’t be able to stick the pins, so instead of hanging it on the wall, you can attach a picture rail to the ceiling and hang it from the ceiling.

  1. Find a place with a pillar It is often not possible to know where the pillars located just by looking at them from the surface of the wall. Try knock the wall and if the sound is light, you can assume that there is no pillar inside. If you prefer more reliable way to check it, we recommend using a tool for look for a base provided by Shinwa Sokutei Co., Ltd. - Amazon - Rakuten

If it is not a heavy artwork, it can be displayed stably even without a pillar behind it, depending on the pins you use.

  1. Prepare environment When you set up an art work you should place it away from direct sunlight /places with extremely high humidity to prevent discoloration.

2. Prepare the equipment

  1. Hook
    1. Three pin hooks are recommended. It is designed to fasten the wall, and it can withstand weight load capacity. The safety load of the products introduced is about 5 kg per one. If the artwork is framed, add the weight of the frame as well to calculate the total weight. Please refer to the purchase link below for hooks. - X Hooks Amazon - X Hooks Rakuten - X Hooks Monotaro - Wall Beauty Amazon

  1. Picture rail Picture rails were designed for use on plaster walls so that you do not have to damage your wall (or wall coverings) to hang artwork. It has a similar structure to a curtain rail. One of the great things about picture rail is that it makes the relocation both in height and position on the wall amazingly simple. To move something left or right on the wall you just slide the hook to wherever you want it positioned. If you want something to be higher or lower, you can simply shorten or lengthen the wire on the back of you picture. No more trying to find a stud or drilling another hole. When installed properly, by being nailed into the wood studs with larger finish nails, it can support heavy loads being hung on walls a large paintings.

3. Set up preparation for the artwork

  1. A frame string tied in one place If the support of the work (the material on the work is drawn) is paper, it cannot be displayed unless it is framed. Also framing may be necessary for oil paintings and Japanese paintings on canvas or panels. In that case, it is common to use hanging hardware and string to pass the string through the frame side, but most of the cases hanging hardware is already attached to the back of the frame. Therefore, in this section, we will explain how to tie a string to the frame. If the total weight of the work and frame is 5kg or less, we recommend tying to tie a strings in one place as shown below. Ideally, it should be as tight as possible. Please refer to the video below for a detailed explanation.

  1. Unframed & Heavy works It is quite common for canvas and panel works to be displayed as they are without framing. If the size is large, framing can be expensive, and artists may want their work to be shown unframed. In such a case, you can attach a string in the same way as when framing by attaching a heaton or hanging hardware to the back side of the wooden frame. -Triangle Hanging Can Amazon -Round Heaton Amazon -Round Heaton Rakuten -Hardware Amazon -Hardware Rakuten
  1. Hanger plate A hanger plate is made of highly durable steel and hooked, so it is much stronger than other hardwares. -Monotaro
  1. Wall hanging metal hooks Hanger plates, Metal hooks, Heaton, etc can be displayed without using any strings. The wall and the back of the canvas are stabilized by attaching metal fittings made to engage with each other with screws. This method is very durable and stable. However, there is a drawback that it is difficult to adjust later if it is not accurately leveled when installing. Also you need a tools such as a level and a measuring tape/ ruler to set up in this way. -Wall Hanging Hooks Amazon -Heaton Rakuten

  1. Support tools If you use strings or hanger plates, the artwork might bend forward. If it's a small piece of work, it's often not noticeable, but if it's bigger size, it will affect how it looks considerably so you can keep it parallel to the wall by attaching rubber to the bottom part of the back of the canvas. A versatile gasket is also useful when fine-tuning the gap but please note that this must be adhered with tape. Since the purpose is to fill the gap, you can use something else instead of the above products if it is rigid like a piece of wood. -Metal crafts frame Amazon -Versatile Gasket Rakuten

4. To set up

  1. Measure height If you could do it with 2 people that would be ideal. One for hold the work up with both hands to find the perfect placement, and the other person for draw a mark on the wall. *Masking tape is recommended for marking. Adhesiveness is moderately weak, making it ideal for position adjustment. It can be easily peeled off at the end, so unlike pencils, it won't leave marks. Normally, it is fitting to place the artwork in a position where the line of your sight and the center of the work are aligned, but when displaying at home, it may be better to place it in a lower position because it is often enjoyed closer than in galleries / museums. The position to draw a mark will change depending on the decoration method, but please use the following calculation formula as a guide for normal 3-pin hooks. (your line of sight) + (height of the artwork÷2) - (frame width) - 10 = attachment position e.g.) 160cm + (50cm÷2) - (5cm) - 10 = 170cm In the calculations above, a margin of approximately 10cm is given in the case using a string for the frame (the strings might bend so) -Major Convex Amazon
  1. Horizontal Adjustment When using a hanger plate, metal hook, etc., you can measure accurately by using a spirit level (indicator) during installation. If you are using a string for the frame, you can adjust the horizontality by shifting the position of the string, so attach the hook and hang the work before using the level. The most common type is a “bubble level”, and there are various types such as a digital type and a laser pointer, but the bubble level is recommended because even though it is cheaper than others, you can still trust its performance. -Amazon

6. Bonus - for those who interested in DIY

If you live in a rental place and don't want to damage the walls, and also are interested in a simple DIY, we recommend setting up a 2x4 Lumber and screwing into it. A jack product such as Labrico, DIAWALL are often used and attach the parts that will act as the above-mentioned struts to the ends of the lumber that is slightly shorter than the ceiling height.
